Washington, D.C. sits at the center of one of the most historically rich and naturally beautiful regions in the country. Within two hours in any direction you’ll find colonial waterfront towns, Blue Ridge mountain valleys, wineries, and presidential estates. These are the day trips our guests ask about most, each with its own full itinerary to help you make the most of a single day.
One underrated advantage of staying in one of our homes — a full kitchen. Before any day trip, our guests can pack a proper lunch, fill a thermos, and grab snacks from the fridge — the kind of small thing that makes a long day out genuinely comfortable and saves a stop along the way.
A beautifully preserved colonial waterfront city and home of the U.S. Naval Academy. Brick streets, fresh oysters, sailboats in the harbor, and one of the most walkable downtowns on the East Coast.
The region surrounding D.C. has quietly become one of the East Coast’s most exciting wine and craft beer destinations. Loudoun County in Virginia — just 45 minutes west — is home to over 40 wineries along its well-marked wine trail. Pair a winery visit with a stop at one of the area’s farm-to-table restaurants for a genuinely memorable day out.
Skyline Drive winds along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through Shenandoah National Park — one of the most scenic drives in the Eastern U.S. Stunning in fall, wildflower-filled in spring.
George Washington’s beautifully restored estate sits on a bluff above the Potomac, just south of the city. The grounds, museum, and river views make it one of the most rewarding half-day trips from D.C.
A remarkable small town at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, steeped in Civil War history. The lower town is a living history site — the upper trail offers sweeping river views.
The site of one of the Civil War’s most decisive battles, and one of the most well-preserved and sobering historic landscapes in the country. The battlefield, museum, and cemetery demand at least a half day.
Just across the Potomac, Old Town Alexandria is a charming waterfront neighborhood with cobblestone streets, 18th-century architecture, excellent restaurants, and easy Metro access from D.C.
The largest caverns in the Eastern U.S., with underground formations that have to be seen to be believed. Pair it with Skyline Drive or a stop in the Shenandoah Valley for a full day out of the city.
Making the most of a day trip from D.C.
Leave early. Most destinations are most enjoyable before midday crowds arrive. An early start also gives you time to linger without rushing back.
Weekdays are significantly quieter. Annapolis, Mount Vernon, and Old Town Alexandria in particular get very busy on summer and fall weekends.
Some trips don’t need a car. Annapolis, Baltimore, and Alexandria are all reachable by train or bus — worth considering if you’re not driving during your stay.
Combine thoughtfully. Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria pair naturally. Shenandoah and Luray Caverns make a full day together. Don’t try to stack too many stops.
Fall is peak season for Shenandoah. Foliage typically peaks in mid-to-late October. Skyline Drive gets congested on weekends — weekday visits are far more relaxed.
Check site hours before you go. Historic sites, national parks, and smaller attractions often have seasonal hours, timed entry, or advance ticket requirements.
